a new WIP and a giveaway

Connecting Threads has a brand spankin' new fabric line called Matsuri. It's be-au-t-iful cotton lawn fabric. If you aren't sure exactly what cotton lawn fabric is, thankfully wikipedia knows! I had to do a little research myself. This fabric is so, so nice and the colors are wonderful!
The top left print in the block above is my absolute favorite! I was very curious to how it would sew up, since it is such fine fabric, but it sews up beautifully. I'm sashing it with plain white quilting cotton, and I'm happy to report that mixing the fabric weights is working very well. It's another thing I was curious about.

I'm using this tutorial by Ashley at film in the fridge. I think it compliments the fabric quite nicely....clean lines and perfectly sized pieces to show off the pretty prints. It's handy that I didn't have to do the math, either. Thank you, Ashley! :)
I was going to make it a lap size, as that seems to be my default size when it comes to quilt making. But about a week ago I was sewing with a few friends in the church basement. As I was working on my blocks they asked what size I was going to make the quilt. Heather, who's motto in quilting is "go big or go home", suggested I keep going. So....I'm now making this a king size. You gotta be careful who you ask advice from! When I showed my husband the photo, he said he really liked it. Works out well, since it will eventually be on our bed!
This is what I've got so far. (Please excuse the weird lines from the church basement floor.) I'm not excited to add all that skinny sashing in between, but it's going to be totally worth it! Right???

Now, for the giveaway! Connecting Threads is kindly offering up 3 fat quarter stacks of this beautiful fabric line to three of my readers. If you would like to win a fat quarter bundle, please leave me a comment in this post. In your comment I'd like to hear what your default quilt size it. As stated earlier, I almost always make lap size quilts (60" x 72") if it's not for a specific purpose. I'm not sure why, it's just the way it is! I will pick the winners next Monday. The contest is open to US and Canadian residents only.

If you are curious about cotton lawn or if you would like a few tips about sewing with lawn fabric, Connecting Threads has a fact sheet that you can download here.

One more thing...my book is back in stock! Yay!

Happy Monday to you!

A default size, you mean you actually have to finish a quilt. I tend to just keep making blocks and starting new projects if I have to actually finish a quilt it depends on who it is for but I always want to keep them so my goal is KING size. bigger is always better when quilting. That way you can buy more fabric or win it yeah!!!

Hi! The new collection is gorgeous.

My default quilt is always a KING, usually 108 X 108. I use this size on my antique double bed, which gives me a great drop on both sides and for my kids (who of course, all own king size beds).
Thanks for making this offer available.

I've recently returned to quilting after a long break while working outside the home. Prior to my break, I made twin-size quilts for my children. Now that I am retired, I plan to make a lot of twin size quilts for my fifteen grandchildren! btw: cotton lawn was quite popular back in the day and was used mostly for clothing--mainly blouses and dresses.

I love to make queen size quilts, have two pieced together now, but can't afford to get them quilted. Maybe someday!!

Susan K. said...

I really don't have a default quilt size. I make crib, twin and lap size quilts and wallhangings. I've also made some queen size quilts. It really depends on the project - the pattern, how much fabric I have to work with, the time I have, if it's a gift, etc.

I love the idea of the cotton lawn fabric.

Becky B. said...

I so want this fabric!! When my catalog came I knew this line was for me. Love your design choice.

Lap size quilts are quicker, yes, but my favorite size to make is queen!

I go through periods when I want to make lots of baby quilts which are usually 36x36. The local hospital caring for preemies loves to be able to send the baby home with a quilt!!
These fabrics are very pretty - I look forward to hearing how well they quilt!!

My default size is lap size, same as you, though I'd love to make twin or queen size quilts the norm. Maybe when I retire! Thanks for the giveaway!

I don't have a default quilt size. I just make whatever the pattern calls for.

Well, I have dabbled in quilt making for years, but life always seemed to get in the way. So, I finally completed my "bucket list" quilt. My mother and I began this quilt some 25 years ago - for my young daughter who is now 38 years old. We candle wicked 30- 17 inch square blocks. I was able to put the sashing, cornerstones and border on this year. It is 128 inches long and 103 inches wide!!! Oh my!! Sent it to a long arm quilter (I'm too much of a newbie to do this myself)Can't wait to see the finished product. I think I must "downsize".

I love lawn fabric! It is an old one that I have not seen for several years. I'd be ever so greatful to win a stack! The samples you have sewn with the collection is really great! Thanks for all the inspiration you give. Leonore

I've only made one real quilt so far and it was 44" x 70". Prior to that I did lots of placemats. Great way to practice a new technique! Thanks for hosting this giveaway!

My default size has been full size for the last year because my grandkids want bed size quilts! LOL! Can't wait to start making lap quilts!

Although a lap size quilt is often easier to start and finish, I'll have to say I've made more queen size than anything. They are for the special girls in my family and they all have queen size beds. Of course they have to be sent to the longarm quilter because they are too big for me to deal with on my little sewing machine. Happy Quilting!!!~*~*~*~*~

Michele said...

I generally default to lapsized quilts. I only do so because it is too hard for me to quilt larger ones with my machine. I would love to make larger quilts but I don't know where to get them quilted. This fabric looks awesome. I have been looking to make a cathedral window quilt (as this won't require the quilting of a normal larger quilt) and this fabric would be awesome as the "windows"

Anonymous said...

I like to make a large lap size. We'll say 70x80. It's not to big to go through my machine for quilting, but still big enough to cuddle with a family member under!

thegirlwithacurl said...

We baby to lap size quilters seemed to be a majority. Eventually I'll work up to something larger!

fran said...

I haven't attempted a king size quilt yet but would love to. This fabric looks very interesting so I will have to order it! Your pattern is beautiful.

I have been coveting this collection since I got the catalog... I am expecting a baby girl, and it is so sweet! I rarely make quilts without a specific purpose, but I guess I do make a lot of twin size quilts.

Oh, AmandaJean, I am so not a big quilt maker yet! I am starting out so small and no bigger than a table runner one square at a time! I love quilts and will be so thrilled when I can quickly whip one up quickly. My big goal is to make valances out of my table runners. I have the batik material from Connecting Threads waiting for me. It will be so fun to get those beautiful colors up to enjoy. This new Matsuri fabric looks beautiful and has a relaxing look for me. It would be fun to win the fabric!

lovely fabric and a lovely giveaway! My quilts always end up smaller than I want them to, but I think my 'default' would be a typical lap/throw size. I've never measured a quilt in my life so I don't know exactly!

I don't have a default quilt size because I haven't made enough to have one. I would probably make a crib size since I hope to have grandchildren someday.

I've made more King size quilts than anything else, but I would rather my default be full or smaller.

I am always working on something & my default size is usually between lap and twin. That way I always have something on hand when a need arises, like last month when a single mother was burned out and lost everything, all I had to do was pull from my finished quilts, put their names on a suitable quilt and deliver them, anomously.

I think the lap size quilt is a real favorite so I make a lot this size. I'd love a chance to win this great fabric collection!

I never heard the words lawn cotton until yesterday ~ had no idea what it meant! Thank you for the link :)
I'm on my fourth quilt: one king, one lap, one twin, and now a queen. I liked the smaller ones because I was able to machine quilt them, but the one I sleep under is the king, so that's my favorite!

My default size is in the 60"x60" range, but it really depends on my final design. The one I'm working on now will be my biggest at 80"x80". The smallest was 48"x48". They are all square, but I'm not!

I usually make lap-sized quilts. I did make a twin bed sized quilt for my daughter. I haven't finished quilting it and binding it though.

I haven't used cotton lawn. I wondered how sewing that type of fabric would be like. The fabric colors are gorgeous, btw!

I think this has to be one of the prettiest fabrics I have seen in a really long time. They blend so well and the colors are wonderful. I can see several different quilts made from this. The colors seem to blend well enough to use any pattern there is. I would love to make it up into a really nice size for my full size bed, but at the same time I can see giving it to someone else also. Thanks so much for who ever designed the fabric and useing these colors. They are Beautiful. Good Luck to everyone who has a chance to win.

I though of Jane Austin, when I read about lawn. Isn't it the light fabric that was used in Victorian times for summer dresses?? Anyway the lawn you display is beautiful, love the colors. Would love to have some. Rosalina

That's a very nice looking quilt, like the sharp colors. My wife makes lots of queen size and baby size quilts. I'm just working on my first lap size quilt.

I notice I am one of many who are making baby quilts. I love how quickly they go together and good thing... between friends and family in the last few years I have completed 31 small quilts. Several have been 25' x 30", a perfect size to throw over the car seat or in the stroller. Then I jumped to a queen size last month and at the same time am working on 2 table runners, so there is no one size.

I make either small wall quilts, about 18 x18 inches, or bed quilts, about 75 x 50 inches. The lawn looks lovely - I think Liberty fabrics are mostly lawn.

My default size is usually lap size as anything larger frustrates me to know end when it comes to quilting. Plus I confess, I am all about instant gratification and large quilts just don't provide it. ;)

Doreen Kuster said...

My default size is around 45" x 45". I make a lot of wall hangings. They also act as insulation since I live in the snow belt in NE Ohio.

Usually I make baby or small child quilts. I would love more than anything to branch out and do something bigger, still hopefully will make something for my mother-in-law in Mexico one day, but I am determined to finish (quilt) them myself and at this point I am not too confident with my FMQ nor do i have a mid/long arm to help. So for now I stay content with the smaller quilts.

Kim said...

All the quilts I've made in the past few years have been baby quilts :) We have a lot of young friends (I say young since most of them are half my age) at that child-bearing stage. The kids who were in youth group when my husband was a youth pastor are now grown and starting families.

Although I now live in South America, any time I win something I have it sent to my daughter in Indiana who saves -- or sends -- it. Is that okay?

My default quilt size is throw or lap size. I also usually always end up modifying patterns to make them the size to fit the amount of fabric I have, or the size I want. My second default size is baby size (45" x 54" ish). I want to use this fabric so bad...I think it is sooo beautiful. I would also worry about how it works on the longarm machine and also how it shrinks compared to the regular cotton when it is washed....

I usually make twin size quilts but lately I have been gravitating towards baby quilt due to number of babies about to arrive and instant gratification of small quilts. Matsuri line looks so pretty and fresh.

I don't have a 'default' size. I choose a pattern and make the size intended. I have made more lap size than bed size quilts. Related to quilt sizes, I have a tale to tell! Years back, in the begining of time, when I was a beginner, there was a mystery quilt in a magazine based on old time sampler stitcheries. Being a former needleworker, I jumped right in! I purchased a ton of fabric. One section per issue; I can handle that. After getting involved too far for turning back, I looked at the initial instructions to discover it was a queen size quilt. Here I thought I was making something much smaller, like the needlework sampler wallhangings!! The quilt top is finished, by the way. It's unique but not quilted.

Why yes I would like to win a lovely little bundle of cotton! I love giveaways and these patterns are GORGEOUS!

Jeanne said...

I have made more lap quilts than any other size. I also like wall hangings. I stand a better chance of finishing them! I think my grand-daughter would enjoy a dress or skirt out of that lawn.

Anna Geletka said...

Oh, and my default quilt size is all over the place. I've made everything from tiny wall hangings to a queen size but I'm a little afraid to make a king size. Sorry, I promise I'm not trying to double enter, I just jumped the gun on the commenting part - you can delete my above comment if you want to!

Karen said...

I always want to make quilts that will cover the size of my current bed (or larger). I've only made one lap quilt, but after reading the comments I think I see more in my future! The fabric is beautiful!

paige13d said...

I haven't made a lot of quilts but the vast majority of them have been baby quilts around 45" x 60".

ruthshelton10@att.net said...

I do not follow directions well. So, I just pick out fabrics I like, think of a pattern I like and start making it. I start out with lap quilt size intentions, then, they get bigger. Or if a special ocassion comes up I start making a quilt.

SueB said...

Your quilt is going to be beautiful! My default size used to be queen sized, but a nasty back injury now makes wall and miniature my default as it is all I can manage. Thanks!

Dana White said...

Well usually if I'm making a quilt I already know where it's going, so my size is what fits. But when I'm trying out something new - baby quilt size for sure.

Beautiful fabric.

just go for it- bigger is best I like the pattern

Nessa said...

I alternate fairly evenly between lap sized for the couch and queen sized for my bed. That fabric is superb and I love what you've done with it.

swakins said...

I like making baby quilts, just enough to keep your interest without wearing you out. swakins@aol.com

Like you, I'm hooked on lap quilts, only because I can still quilt that size on my Bernina. Sometimes they almost go to twin size, depends on the fabric and pattern. Love what you're working on. Thanks to all for the giveaway. Happy Easter!

mik41 said...

I do them all! I usually have several going on at the same time. I do love to make baby quilts, because they are small and I get to see the finished product sooner than the rest! Thanks for the opportunity to win some very lovely fabric!

Lap or crib-sized. They're quick an inexpensive!

I have been eyeing Connecting Threads' new line-- would love to have a stack!!

Nearly 1000 comments? No chance of winning. However...my default size is the same as yours if I don't know what the quilt is for...

Love these fabrics! My favorite quilt size so far has been lap size/wall hanging. I guess I am afraid I'll get in over my head with a big quilt. I think I'm ready though!

Wow, this line is gorgeous! So far I have exclusively made crib size quilts, but I'm only up to my 5th and 6th quilts. Most of my projects have been intended for babies, but also queen size batting divides up perfectly into four crib sized quilts. Once day I will make a queen size quilt. :)

TJM said...

I love making lap sizes quilts as well! Usually around the 50 to 70 range. Your quilt looks awesome!

mandalei said...

I hear you on the lap quilts, mainly because I hate quilting on a domestic machine because I don't have the left-shoulder-strength for anything larger! So... I did what any sane person would do and bought a longarm. Not. In my defense, I am trying to actually maybe open a shop instead of just giving away everything I make.

Teresa in Music City said...

Wow those fabrics are really lovely! I'd love to win them so I can try out the new fabric weights. If not, I may have to buy some :*) My go-to size is also a large lap quilt. I like it to be large enough for a couple to cuddle under it on the sofa and have their feet covered. It also keeps the size of backing fabric required to a reasonable size.

Tabitha said...

I typically go smaller since I make baby quilts and never a set size - just what ends up working out!

Donna said...

I don't have many quilts under my belt.I have made a couple of crib quilts. I just recently finished hand-quilting a full-size quilt that my mom has embroidered for me. My last quilt was a lap sized quilt that was so pretty that I wished I had made it to fit my bed.

Brenda seth said...

My default size is twin...seems better to wrap up in. I love this line and the mixing of weights is awesome. Thanks for the chance to win...I would love to try this lawn cotton...

I seem to make queen or twin sized quilts, and then throw in a few baby quilts for friends. Thanks for a chance.

Lisa Cox said...

I've only made 1 quilt so far and it was lap sized. I'm in the middle of 2 others right now, 1 lap size, the other queen size.
I'm finding that the lap size quilts are much easier for me to finish. LOL

Amber said...

My default size is lap/throw. I actually haven't finished one that is any bigger than that, but the mystery quilt I am working on now is a Queen. I love to see a stack of throw pillows folded up waiting to be grabbed by the family for a good movie!

Annmarie said...

I have made several king size quilts and could never find a backing wide enough for the addtional 4 inches the long armer requires so I've resolved that from now on I'm not making anything larger than a queen. So far no one has complained! Lovely fabric - thanks for the chance.

Ginny said...

I seen this on the Connecting Threads website, very pretty! Not sure about lawn, I have never used it. I usually make lap size 60x72 or baby, but have tackled a couple of queen size Thanks for the giveaway!

Bobbie said...

I dont' think Ive ever actually measured the size- I tend to make bigger baby quilts or snuggle up on the couch size- from my chin to under my feet :)
Love the colors!

soggybottomflats said...

My default baby quilt size is usually 36" square but seems to end up 52"! I like baby to be able carry it around with him/her until they're in the 8th grade. My couch cuddler size is pretty much a standard 80"x96". Thank you~Elaine

Most ALL of my quilts are for Quilts of Valor for our Veterans. So far this year I have completed 31 tops and backs, and have several ready for borders. Our quilts are 55x65 or a little larger, so am always looking for simple but effective patterns and particularly those that can use scraps or fat quarters!

Michelle said...

For big quilts, it's about 60x60 and for the scrappy baby quilts, it's about 30" square.

Kylie Carlson said...

I tend to sew to about Twin sized- mostly due to the large number of kids in the family. Thank you for a lovely giveaway.

Heather D. said...

My default quilt size is baby, or throw. Thanks for the giveaway, and WOW, what a lot of comments!!

Judy said...

I usually make the size the pattern is for. A couple of times I have made it bigger

quilterpam said...

Love the pattern and fabric. I do worry about mixing different weights of fabrics.

JanetK said...

I don't really have a standard size - I wish all my quilts could be at least twin so it would be okay for a throw too.

Anonymous said...

Usually I make quilts slightly larger than lap size. I call them bed toppers! It seems to appeal to me and most of the patterns I pick are larger or I add to them.

Maloah said...

Hi! Thanks for the give-away contest.... the fabric is beautiful and I love the quilt you're making - a king size- wow! I usualy make lap-size unless it's for a baby; but even then, i tned to make them big so they can use them for a long time.... Love what you're doing with quilting!

Shauna said...

I'm not sure what my default quilt size would be, but somewhere in the neighborhood of 69" x 82" is a good size :)
Thanks for the chance to win!

Skipper said...

Beautiful! I'd love to get my hands on that fabric. My default quilt size? Definitely somewhere between lap and twin...but I usually always end up adding enough borders and trim to make them twin size :)

Lyn said...

I like to make wall hangings and also lap quilts. Thanks so much.

Celia said...

Thanks for sharing this new line of fabric. I would like to see it in person.

Oh yes! Those fabrics are just so charming. Like you, I couldn't resist -- I got the kit and am eagerly waiting for it to arrive. My last quilt was a heavy, dark flannel one for my hubby, so I am ready for a light, bright spring project!

BTW my default size is lap size simply because they are easiest to machine quilt.

I like 60 x 80. This fabric is really beautiful, I have never used lawn. A new experience.

Emcee said...

I like baby quilt size - so much easier to machine quilt. I also do a lot of lap quilts - so I guess sizewise I like to do quilts 40x50 and 50x60 for approx sizes.

Nancy said...

I'm a little partial to lap size too. If I am doing the quilting that does work best. Such pretty fabric.

Unknown said...

Hi
i was making 2 full size quilts a month until hubby got laid off. Now i got hooked on lap or little bigger cause i love seeing my soon to be 9 years all wrapped up in them, it just puts a smile on my face.

Celia said...

Having some difficulty sending comments. But, I love your layout, and the fabric is so pretty. Would love to see in my mailbox and try it out. If I win, I will make a baby quilt. My usual size is like yours.

Laura said...

I'm not sure I have a go to size since most of the quilts I have made are for specific purpose. I do like lap size because they are easy to handle and don't take to long to complete. I'm currently thinking about going big. My Calif. king bed needs a quilt.

Diana said...

I love your quilt pattern you have used for this fabric. My default quilt size is Queen. I don't get many done, but I sure enjoy doing them.

Mawmawjade said...

My quilts seem to be either twin or queen size. I think I'm gonna start sticking with lap quilts. I'll be able to make more! I love this fabric line.

andrea said...

I have yet to make a quilt that didn't have a specific purpose, so there have been baby and twin sizes. I have a scrap denim WIP that's a queen size. I think a quilt should be at least a big throw, like you suggest, because what good is a quilt if the quiltmaker can't cuddle up under it?

Heather A said...

I don't have a default quilt size. I'm a big of a beginner so maybe I'll get to that point.

PJ said...

Twin or Lap size quilts. Thought lately I've been making lots of wall hanging,s tablerunners and placemats.

1lesliehart said...

That is one huge quilt! We have a king size that I would eventually love to make a quilt for but I don't have the courage yet! Thanks for the great giveaway!

Christy said...

My default size is probably full-size, but it really depends a lot on how much I like the blocks! If it's a quilt for someone else, it's normally lap-size, since they can be finished a lot quicker.

Kelly said...

Do I dare admit that I've never made a quilt before -- I have aspirations, and I'd love to have some inspiring fabric with which to work. :)

Holly said...

That cotton lawn is just gorgeous!
My default size is probably wall hanging or miniature. I don't have a very big stash so that is usually what I end up making. I do have a few bed-size quilts in progress, but that is definitely NOT my default size. Though I wouldn't mind if it was :) Maybe someday, when the stash grows. ;)

Jen said...

I haven't made anything bigger than lap size yet, but I really like that size.

Kimberly said...

Pretty much always make a larger sized baby quilt. Around 60x40, mainly because it's the size I can get finished pretty quickly. I love that new line ESP that floral. It would make a cute skirt for my little girl. Thanks for the giveaway!

Margaret said...

I have probably made more lap size than any other. I would like to do more queen size so they would fit my bed.

Krystal said...

I love to quilt a variety of different sizes! If I absolutely love it I tend to make it bigger. I have had my eye on this fabric line since I got a mailer from Connecting Threads... bea-uti-ful! Would love to win!!

Sarah said...

I've only successfully completed one quilt and it was almost a full size. I need to sandwich and quilt my full size 9-Patch I learned to make here! So I guess ~full size is my default!

Pam said...

my default quilt size is 60x70 althought i do alot of 45x45 for babies

Miss Jamee Quilts said...

i like big quilts...big bed quilts...at least 80x80...yikes! though i have been distracting myself with totes and pillows lately...the instant gratification is great! if i win one of these charm packs, i will make a lampshade cover for my living room!...or maybe a pillow?

I love your quilt, it is beautiful! I'm making a king size quilt ad well. It''s a civil war BOM, General's Wives. I have made or making all the sizes. I've made about the same number of quillts between lap and twin. It's usually depended on who was receiving the quilts.

Thank you and Connecting Threads for an awesome giveaway and a chance to win some beautiful fabric.
