a blue giveaway

Happy November! Every month my family and I play this silly little game. We all try to be the first one to wish someone else a happy month. This morning I was greeted by my 7 year old (before I even got out of bed) with a "Happy November!" Not a bad way to start off the day.

November is my favorite month. I love fall. I love the Thanksgiving holiday. It's cooler so there are plenty of chances to wrap up in a quilt. It's a great time to make more quilts. (Well, it's always a good time to make more quilts, if you ask me.) I think November is good all around!

In honor of the first day of my favorite month, I'm going to give away a quilt kit to one reader. The quilt kit consists of 42 blue, black and grey kona cottons, so you can make your very own blue quilt. Or...you could use the pre-cut rectangles for various other projects if you so desire. Each rectangle is a generous 5.5" x 19.5" so the possibilities are endless! If you would like to win, please leave me a comment letting me know of any silly games you and your family play. If you don't have one, your favorite color would be a good substitute. Happy Monday to you!

Blue is one of my two favorite colors, green being the other. The kids often have vehicle counting contests while we're driving. How many buses, yellow cars, dump trucks, etc.

When my siblings and I were young my parents taught us to put our hands together, wiggle our fingers, and yell "SQUIRREL" when crossing state lines during road trips. I have actually done this once when driving with an adult friend in the car . . . she was as confused as I was embarrassed.

Don't think my comment went through. One of my favorite family games is Apples to Apples. Most of the members of my family cheat, but we still have a lot of fun. I have played it a few times with my in-laws and they want to follow the rules and pick the best answer. It's not nearly as much fun! ;)

We play a similar silly game at our house - we try to be the first person on the 25th of every month to say "only ___ more months until Christmas!" The kids love it when they beat us parent to it. THanks for the chance to win. My favorite color is blue, so I would be in my blue heaven if I win!

We love all kinds of games but our very favorite will be UNO. We get all excited when someone has only one card.
I would love to win your kit. If I do I would like to make the top and donate it to Margarets Hope Chest ( hopefully Carrie wont mind quilting it).
Thank you

We have sock fights... everyone helps fold the washing whenever the pile gets out of control (about once a week :S) and we end up having "snowball" fights with the balled up socks...
Right now blue and purple are my favourite colours

My youngest 3 daughters and I play a game where you can't think about the game. So when you think about the game you tell the others "I thought about the game." Then they have to say "I thought about the game." That's all there is to the game. It's hard to not think about the game for very long.

Blue is so my favorite color that even my wedding dress was blue (full story available on my blog). Those fabrics are so lovely they make my hands itch. Thanks for the chance.

In my house, we like to compete to see who can wish everyone happy Pi time (3:14, or Pi day on March 14) the most!

I go back and forth between whether purple or blue is my favorite color. I think purple might be my favorite color family in general, but there are some shades of blue that just make me weak at the knees.

Thanks for the cool giveaway! And happy November to you!

There is only one real "tradition", and it is not really for public reading :-) Silly really, not gross!!!

But, my favorite color is green. I'm not sure why, but give me a bunch of green- mostly in the Grass Green family- and I am one happy woman!

Happy November. It's one of my favorite months with family birthdays and Thanksgiving. Our silly ritual is to make faces at one another on the sly at the dinner table. It's always funny when we get away with it and funnier when we get caught!

I would love to win the kit for my baby son. I am planning on making it, regardless, so it'd be an added bonus for this busy mom to win a ready-to-go quilt!

Right now we are too tired to play games. I love all the colors so much it is hard to pick a favorite. My least favorite is green. Still, I love a good apple green!

Tamera said...

Oh, I would love to win this quilt!

My favorite color is orange, but this quilt would be great for a guy. I don't do a lot of guy quilts.

In our home we play "who did it". We like to watch tv shows and movies that have a mystery to them and then we have to guess in the first 5 min. who we think did it. This has been fun, thanks.

I love the blues, and the blue fabrics.. and blue quilts! If I won it, I'd make a "scarlet begonias" quilt based on the grateful dead song...
anyway, our daughter is only a year old, so our games are a little limited, but we do play one game in which she feeds my hand to the "daddy monster." Thanks for the giveaway!

Our family is silly and anytime someone walks in the room for the first time we all pretend that we are asleep.

Linda T said...

When hubby and I were first married we would often walk through our neighbourhood. There was one driveway with pressed concrete that looked really cool. Every time we walked past it we'd say 'nice driveway'. Then it turned into whoever could say it first on our walk, as long as both of us were out of the door.

My favourite colour is blue, although green isn't too far behind!

LOL! I was just going through my blogroll, hitting the newest entries, and I wasn't really paying attention to entry titles -- I read the first two paragraphs and then noticed over 200 comments -- what? On Happy November?! LOL! Then I read the last paragraph and NOW I get it! When the kids both lived at home (and we still lived at the house), my son would walking in front of the doorway into the family room, back and forth, and each time he'd pass, he'd be doing something different. He'd do this twenty or thirty times, until we'd just be rolling!! But just in case, blue is also a favorite of mine!

Happy Monday *and* November!! :)

One family tradition we have is that on birthdays, we decorate the house like crazy while that person is sleeping...from their room, soen the hall, to the kitchen, to a big pile of presents waiting at their place at the table. They wake up into a birthday wonderland with a big smile on their face!

I love your monthly game....may have to try that!

Bananagrams!!! In fact I am so hooked and overly competitive at this game that my kids won't play with me anymore. Thats how obnoxious I am. My husband will still play and sometimes I suspect he lets me win because it makes me happy, which just makes me annoyed and we have to play all over again.

Well with it being election time, we've been playing a game with all the signs in the yards. We pick a candidate (usually the one with the most signs) and see who can spot the most the first. We get pretty tongue tied trying to holler out the names first! Pretty funny too!
The blues are gorgeous!!! Keeping my fingers crossed!!!

Beautiful quilt (the blue one)! My daughter's two and she loves it when I hide in bed when she comes into the room. I have to be noisy and flamboyant about it, though- then she screams with laughter.

Since I have four little boys, we have lots of silly games. One of my favorites is the I Love You game. It goes like this...
I say...I love you
son says....I love you too
I says...I love you 3
son says... I love you 4

...we continue until someone miscounts. The boys aways think I am silly when I start the game and they never know when I will.

Our family fun thing to do is on Thanksgiving morning, we have the "Turkey Dance!" Last year we put on the "Single Ladies" song and everyone who helps clean the turkey out in the morning participates. We made the turkey dance the "Single Ladies" dance. Its a different song each year and its a good way to drain all the water and have fun at 6 a.m. in the morning! HA!

Amber said...

Oh, my little boy absolutely LOVES blue! He would love a quilt made of blue (yes, he loves momma made quilts!)

Hmmm...games? My hubby and I love to play "slug bug" (see a VW bug and poke/slug the other)!

Radmall said...

Silly games? They're all so impromptu, but I suppose some of them are more than one offs--the traditional climb on daddy's back right before bed time and have him not be able to find you; having daughter roll over the yoga ball on her tummy and pull her back to you again and again; snail races--we're big into those in the summer.

Valerie said...

Ah silly games, we have plenty, at the dinner table when someone asks someone else to pass something inevitably that person will pass the item right on by (as if making a circle in front of the asker). It's silly :)

Happy November!

We play "cows on my side" on our car trips through the Midwest. Estimate the cows on your side of the car to a named destination - if you pass a cemetary, you lose your cows and have to start your count over!

I just exhausted my blue solids on a quilt I'm finishing now, so these would be a perfect replacement for my stash. Thanks for the chance to win!

Silly games?? Aside from just being silly all the time, I'm not sure we have any silly games . . . we play "high/low" every day and tell each other our highs and lows of the day . . . a lot of the time we end up laughing over our silly experiences every day. If that doesn't count, I'll have to say that my favorite color is yellow . . . I guess. I'm not sure!! aakkk . . . for my home I decorate in blacks & whites mainly.

We don't really have any family games. My dad was a HUGE April Fool's Day fan so I got a lot of tricks played on me growing up. My husband hates them though so I can't use any of them on him. I've wanted to try putting a bouillon cube in my sister's shower head some morning...but that could be pretty mean.

My favorite color is blue, but I'm always drawn to green fabric for some reason. No biggy, green and blue look great together.

We don't play any silly games like that yet, but my favorite color is probably browns/oranges and greens at least to play with in fabric!

Brenda said...

My son and I used to play a game with a sandy colored rubber crab. One April fool’s day, I stuck the crab in a hand towel in the bathroom and of course it scared the daylights out of him – my intent. What I hadn’t intended was that he would reciprocate. A few days later, I found it in my coffee mug. No caffeine needed that morning. We went back and forth like this for years. When my son left for college I put the crab on one of the shelves in our memory box, adding to the trinkets and memorabilia collected over the years. I pretty much forgot about it until late one night a few weeks ago when I found it in my bed as I pulled back the covers. I could hear my 30 year old son chuckling from another room. He was visiting with his wife and my first grandbaby. That boy scared the daylights out of me – his intent I’m sure. What he hadn't intended was the feeling of utter joy that just warmed me all over.

Play "Marco Polo" in the motel pools. The person who is IT has to keep their eyes closed {lots of questions about THAT happening!}, and then he/she calls out "Marco", and all the others have to answer "Polo". IT person uses the sound to track someone down.

Sing any song we all know while riding in the car, especially old camp songs of DH. ["My Father Killed a Kangaroo" to the tune from Carmen]

Also in the car: "Riddle me, riddle me, riddle me Ree, I'm thinking of something that you cannot see. And it is blue/red/some color. Or it starts with..a letter. Then everyone take turns asking yes/no questions.

We have a homemade board game "Follow the Star" which we play every night between Christmas and Twlefth Night; the characters are all trying to get to Bethlehem to worship the baby.

Deb said...

Draw & Tell a Silly Story
We used a dry-erase board. The 1st person drew 1 item and made up a 1 line story about it. The next person drew 1 item, repeated the 1st sentence and then added 1 sentence of their own. This goes on and on until you want to quit, or the story is sooooo crazy. There are no hard & fast rules. With little ones, the stories can get crazy. This can be adapted to a quiet game in a reception room. All mommies carry at least 1 piece of paper, a crayon or pencil. Played this many times with my son.

I just love your blog and the blue fabric. I don't have a game but I guess my family has one or at least my 2 brothers do. My brothers live in 2 different states, my younger brothers comes to visit once a year. I don't remember how this all started, but it's all about which brother has the picture of our grandfather. My brother in NYC presently has the picture and when he comes to visit he will bring the picture with him and hide it in my others brother's house/cottage. The pic might not be found for months, but this has been going on now for +15 years. Almost like hide and seek, but with a pic and only between 2 brothers. I usually know which brother is in possession of the pic.

I have never used Kona cottons so it would be a new world to me. And I love blue.

We have a special game in our family: when have been out driving with the car and return home again we can see a fairly big church through the woods. If you see the church AND say JSBKF first you win. JSBKF=Jag såg Börstils kyrka först (Swedish, in English I spy the church of Börstil first). Stupid and always a big laugh from the winner and and a sigh from the looser.

it is just me and my hubby (and the 2 dogs and one kitty) ... but we have a tendancy to be silly. We always play "I was there first" - when you are int he car, and crossing a town line, or province line (or entering a new country) we both race to lean as far forward as we can, strechin a hand or foot forward towards the hood of the car (on or under the dash) so one of us can decolare "Iwas there first!".

We also always lift our feet whenever crossing railway tracks (even better if there are double tracks - you have to be quick to touchdown in between the two sets!)

We have short little songs that we make up to go with things. The melody stays the same, but the words change. For instance we have a bed time song, but each night the words are a little different to go with what happened that day.

Lisa Merkley said...

When kissing my kids goodnight we like to tell each other over and over "I love you more!" I especially like this game with my 2 year old as she is learning to form the words. So cute and fun!

Not sure if you have caravans similar to ours in the UK but they have small doors on the side that we have later learnt are storage for gas bottles - when our children were young our explanation to their questions were these were little rooms where people took their pixies from the bottom of the garden on holiday with them, and depending on the size of the door whether they had pixies or fairies in there. This little game kept them enthralled for miles and miles counting each one and guessing whether it would be pixies or fairies each time we passed a caravan, which on a UK motorway in summer there were dozens!

What fun! My 2 year old loves to play peek-a-boo with the baby that is still in my tummy. It's cute.
Thanks for the awesome giveaway!

My favorite color just happens to be blue so I'd love to win that quilt kit!

Here in Brazil the april, 1st is the "lie day". We play games with each others, like "there's a cockroach on your head" or "i'm pregnant" (this one makes my husband crazy).

And I promess to be always honest to you if I win this gorgeous blues!

Thank you.

My kids greet me with "pinch and a punch, first of the month and no returns" - I get pinched, punched and I'm not allowed to do it back. We also play this game, when I'm washing the twins' hair where I say "OK, we're going to wash your hair with sham ..." and they shout "poo" which they think is hilarious. Lovely giveaway by the way - ooh that rhymes - ish

My three brothers and I used to paint in the sand and then guess what the other one was drawing. Whoever was first at getting it right won and had to go next. First we would draw things like the sun, apples, maybe some cars. And then we would think of more different things like a dream, the future, a space cowboy, things like that.
My littlest brother was five the last time we really spend hours playing it and one time even managed to be the first to guess something so he got to draw. Weird lines in the sand, shapes we didn't really know what to do with. We guessed and guessed and for minutes did nothing but say random things that would come into our heads. Well, in the end he told us that the thing we were looking for is a "machine that kisses and cuddles all the time". Yes, he was the little kid that always wanted to cuddle with our Mom :) He is now 21 and sometimes we still play (on paper) and the first thing that we always guess is the "machine that kisses and cuddles all the time" :)

My family tends to play Monopoly every Thanksgiving even though I absolutely can't stand the game. It's takes way too long and my sister always get so competitive! :)

How wonderful! Thanks for the chance! I have lots of favorite colors, but if I had to pick one, perhaps it would be pink.

My favorite color is blue, really! As close as I get to playing games with my kids, who are both taller than me now, is tag on the beach. I started cutting my own blocks of blue after your quilt inspired me, thank-you for the opportunity to win a set!

Blues are so soothing. Beautiful! This isn't a game per se, bu a family tradition, so I think it fits. Every day, my girls and I sit on our front steps waiting for dad to come home. I love seeing how excited they get when he drives up the street.

CJ said...

My favorite color is RED.

I like to see 11:11 on the clock and when we are all home and we see it we give a little cheer/clap. My two college aged kids have a secret handshake with their dad for their bedtime routine (still do it) and a different routine with me.

Happy November!

My girls love, love, love Enchanted Forest - it's like a fairy tale board game 'Hide & Go Seek'. Great art on all the pieces, and they re-tell each story as the cards come up. Those blues are great, btw!

A huge silly tradition we have is an EggStravaganza Egg Spinning Contest each Easter. This includes all the extended side of my husbands family. We have a tournament bracket set up and everything. Everyone is allowed 2 eggs for the tournament and no switching is allowed once it begins. We duel in groups of 2 and whomever's egg spins longer moves on. The loser goes to the loser bracket. In the end, a winner is crowned and they carry the title until the next year when we do it all over again :) Super Crazy Fun!

Jenniffier said...

how fun sounding. It is just my husband and my two dogs at home. So other than the hide and seek we play with our dogs there isn't much.

Aimee said...

We like to make up rhymes all the time. We make up rhymes for everyone's names. I am often called Mama Bahama. We also have Ellen Watermelon and Noah the Boa. Or we make up nonsense rhymes while eating dinner. "Pass the bread please heeze." Or "Thank you, schmank you." It's totally silly and ridiculous, but it makes us all smile.

Tarmy said...

What a fun tradition.

My favorite color is chocolate brown. But my husbands favorite color is any shade of blue.

There is just something about a card game... ever since I was a kid, there hasn't been anything quite like a good round of Rummy!

Kristin Wood said...

My "family game" mostly consists of getting our corgi/border collie mix as riled up as possible, until he starts doing laps around our apartment. Then we chase him/he chases us, and we have a good laugh :)

Thanks for the giveaway!

We always make a wish whenever we notice that the clock says 11:11.

OMG, I LUUUURRVV me some blue. Turquoise, Cerulean, teal, royal, navy, caribbean.....hello lovers.

I once painted my bedroom in high school a bright crayola royal blue, with bonus latex for the extra shiny. Ceiling too! My mother only recently started speaking of the incident, TRUFAX.

Can you tell my favorite color is blue? My master bedroom is shades of blue, and I've been working up the courage to make a Cal King quilt for myself....blue of course!

Kim said...

Our current "funny" game (depending on who you ask) is "Let's see if we can stay up later than mommy and daddy."
Oh, it's big fun. Our 3 yr old is winning. *sigh*
I bet if she had a new blue quilt she would go to sleep. :)

Anne said...

What a generous giveaway! I love the blues but my favorite color will always be green!

I see lots of people want a blue quilt! wow! Can't think of any silly games we play at the moment...so green's my favorite color.

mandalei said...

my 2 year old came up with this one, and we're still playing it 1.5 years later:
He says "don't waaaugh" and then while he giggles we make straight faces. Eventually, we say "don't laaaaugh" and he giggles away until he pulls out a zoolander-like face of seriousness, at which point we lose it entirely because the look is so comical. it's pretty awesome!

Tine said...

I like that...Happy November :)
We don't reaally have games like that in my family, I used to have lots of them with my parents, somehow I just haven't made any with my own children - must change that!!
Fantastic give-away!!!

mamainstitches said...

Oh those blues would be perfect for my son! It's his favorite color :)
We like to play hide & seek - even the baby thinks it's fun!

Lisa said...

Well, I like blue, but I love magenta!

When my daughter was younger and she was sick, we had a bell I would put by her bedside. When she needed something she would ring the bell and I would come running. It made her feel safe and I could get a few things done around the house. She is now 26 and we found the bell the other day. She loves to ring that bell and watch me jump! hahaha. Wait till it's her turn!

Lizzy said...

Silly games... well, we have a 2 year old, so these days all our games are pretty silly. I guess our favorite one these days is trying to answer the question "if you were any truck, what truck would you be?" (over. and over. and over. again) I guess it's not so silly, but after a few rounds, our two year old is hollering with laughter.

Crazyquiltgirl said...

What a creative give-away, and since this is my birthday month, too, that would be a great prize! My blue stash is sadly depleted, so blues are just fine, but I'm not picky, purples, greens, pinks, reds...anything really because I quilt for myriad grandkids! Have a great NOVEMBER!!!

Lisa said...

The main games we seem to be playing around here lately are super hero and mommy vampire!

Katie @SwimBikeQuilt said...

Holy Comments! Whenever anyone is sad, we do a "family hug" which is a huge dogpile/hugfest. Until the person smiles. It usually works.

Mrsblocko said...

We play slug bug, although there is no slugging allowed. We just say "slug bug (color of the car)" when we see a vw beatle. My daughter kicks my butt now.

Regina said...

No silly games yet. Mine are young so it's pretty much I Spy and that's it. My fav color today is blue because the sky is finally blue after a couple of weeks of grey.

Tara said...

I love the blue quilt. My stash actually has no blue so that would be a nice addition. My family doesn't play any games but I'm looking forward to the day my girls are old enough to.

i would love those blues! they're so pretty.

silly games - i must be a bad mom, because i can't think of any. sometimes we play i spy in the doctor's office, because my boys somehow turn into monkeys when we go into the doctor's office.

we use to call our baby josephine, who just began crawling, BOOKWORM. Because when we read with her bigger brother, who just turned 3, she desperately trys to grab his book. he dies from laughter everytime we call her like that. now, in kindergarden, he refers to his sister as "the bookworm" when it comes to her!

When my kids were little, I would make them paper airplanes and we'd fly them across the room keeping a running score in our heads...I'd be a little 'slow' to tally on purpose so they could do it...I thought it was a great math game for them and they didn't even know they were learning. I'd also ask how many I wins I needed to catch up so subtraction was in there too...tricky mommy! :)
I love aquas and greens lately so my stash is 'leaning' that way..would love to have some blues to balance things up a bit!

Michelle said...

Very pretty blues. We don't play any games like that so I'll say that blue is my favorite color!

Leah said...

My favourite colour is blue.

And as for games,we do play board games and cards. As for what is favourites - it depends and changes every so often. I think the silliest is trying to play Scrabble with kids who can't read... Oh the fun of having a 4yo and 9yo!

Alicia said...

Beautiful blues!

We play "Last one to dinner is a rotten egg!" It causes everyone to scurry to the table and sometimes the last one has the door closed on him (for just a few moments!)

My boyfriend and I play a game when we get dessert. We take turns cutting the last morsels in half to see who has to eat the last "half". It can go on for a long while.

My kids are all grown so we don't get to play games like that anymore so you get a story from when I was a kid. We had a little beany frog and for some reason he would get moved around by everyone in the family doing different goofy things. We never knew where he'd pop up, he might fall on us from the doorway or he might be on the vanity trying to put on our makeup. It was silly, but he gave us a lot of laughs.

Connie said...

Guess what?!! My favorite color is blue!

Bessiemae said...

My favorite color is blue. My 5 year old boy woke me up this morning saying "MOMMY! Is today Thanksgiving??". If Halloween is over, it must be Thanksgiving, right?

EJ said...

Anytime we drive through a tunnel, (or go under an underpass if we are trying to keep someone from going to sleep or getting carsick), we all say "Aaahhhhhhhh" [like for the doctor] for the length of the tunnel.

Those blues would make a lot of cool projects!

Rachel said...

My family don't play silly games but me and my boyfriend play silly games all the time! We have a silly little language all of our own and everthing. Oh and in case you were interested my favourite colour is PURPLE! YUM! :)

We used to have a silly tradition of dancing to "Message in a Bottle" by the Police with a baby and toddler every night before bed.

Blue, in all it's shades, is my favourite colour. Pale powder blue, dark sky blue, navy, royal, midnight, smoky, slate, teal, aqua, periwinkle, turquoise, cornflower, need I go on. How many other colours cover such a spectrum of so many happy associations? The blue of hte sky, the ocean, bluebirds, cornflowers, the smart navy uniforms??!!
Blue......I promise I'll put it to good use!

Thanks,
Kim.

Each morning when I throw open the curtains my children like to hear me sing our "It's a Beautiful Day" song. It's just a silly little tune I made up and it changes with green grass, white snow, cloudy skies, or blue skies. They like it.

Well for games I like to play cribbage with my Grandmother. We use to play scrabble but she gets to competitive!

My silly game involves chasing the cat around the house. She hides and I pretend not to see her. I ask "Where's Yapyap?" and she pops out and runs off to hide again. She has found some very clever hiding places.

Caroline said...

No way I'm going to win this, but I couldn't resist telling our game!

My husband thought it was the funniest thing to watch his Buddha-bellied brother poke himself in the belly and say "hoo-HOOOOO!" ala the Pillsbury Dough Boy. So now it is our game to poke each others' belly button and say "hoo-HOOO!" It is quite comical to watch my 3-year-old do it to my 5-month-old daughter, me, or my husband.

Sarah said...

Anytime someone lost something and was looking for it, our typical response was, "I ate it." It became a game to see who could figuratively eat the silliest things. Stupid, I know, but we enjoyed it.

My favorite color is purple.

Victoria Paige @ Boutique Uniquely said...

My family doesn't have any games they play yet, but I have a little one coming soon so I'm sure the games will follow!

My favorite color has been pink lately, I think it's because I've been preparing my little girl's nursery. There's a lot of pink, brown, and green going on in there. It looks lovely.

I'd love to make a blue quilt. I've seen so many on blogs and I just love the way the different shades of blue and gray go together. I think it's spectacular!

I don't know if it can be considered a "game", but it is silly. Whenever my DH and I are on a road trip, we compete to see who can call out "Camper" the fastest when we see any RV or Travel Trailer. Whoever calls it first gets a point, but if you call it out too early and it turns out to not be one, you lose 2 points. It's kind of our version of Slug Bug but without all the hitting.=) Thanks for the opportunity to win these great fabrics. I would love to make my very own Blue quilt.
