flock block

As much as I love free piecing quilts without a pattern, sometimes it's refreshing to piece traditional quilt blocks. This one is called the flock block. Each block finishes at 12". (Three complete blocks and one partial block is shown here.) When the blocks are rotated, it forms a neat secondary design. I made the block as I wrote a tutorial and I loved the design so much that I decided to keep going and make an entire quilt out of it.
.
This is going to be for my youngest son, since he has been quite vocal about the the fact that there are way too many girl quilts going to the youngest member of our family. Such injustice in the world, I tell you.

I love free piecing quilts too - or with my own designs. I haven't tried piecing with a set pattern before from someone else.

This seems like a nice design - a traditional block - to try out. :) I do love traditions.

Heart, heart, heart. It's solids too, but you had me at HSTs!

I can see that secondary pattern forming. It will be awesome.

Beautiful block! I agree. We are so attracted to florals etc. It is hard to find manly fabric. I like these colors!

This ia a really sharp, crisp looking block, I hope your son likes it.

i totally agree about traditional quilts! I love them!

(and i am not ignoring your email you sent weeks ago. I'd love to see you in November...maybe I can even make it to the retreat this year!)

Great colors in your block. I love secondary patterns, they are so cool!

That injustice/not fair thing kinda never goes away, does it!

I LOVE it! I tend to make more things for my son than my daughter BECAUSE he's so vocal about it. I also like the challenge of making boy things.

This is really a beautiful block - Love your colour choices! I hope you will post pics further along so we can see that secondary pattern emerge.

Solids are such a refreshing change from all the mod prints that are popular now. Love the block!

Love that design; what a gorgeous quilt it will be.

That is a beautiful block! I think it's amazing how you can take a traditional design and make it contemporary by choice of fabric. And I find that it's hard to find good fabrics for "male" quilts - little boys are easy but once they get older it's hard to find appropriate fabrics. I'm currently hoarding old shirts of my husband's to use in one....

I LOVE traditional blocks. I feel they really come alive with modern fabrics or solids. This one is stunning in those solids! One lucky boy!

Love that block! It is nice to get to see an arrangement as well. Great colors too - thanks for sharing.

Hahaha -- isn't it fun that boys love our quilts too? My boys loved the quilts that I made for them. Love your block -- that's my kind of quilt -- one you put together from a favorite block!

I like your color choices, and I do love traditional blocks/patterns too. I'm pretty sure we have WAY more girl quilts around here too, even though the boys outnumber the girls almost 3 to 1. The girly ideas just pop into my head, whereas I have to actually THINK about a boyish one. Thanks for the inspiration (as always).

I do like the challenge sometimes of piecing a complex block. Love the way your color choices make the pattern sing! (Or is singing girly too?)

So when do we get the gift of your wisdom? And if I need to pay for a pdf of the instructions, I am totally okay with that. Here's my paypal card, just email me. In fact just let me start a tab for all of them when the book comes out ! (I do wish you'd write a book and get published, although heaven knows that could take a year or more.)

I really love that...beautiful!

My son (12 y/o) picked out the fabrics and the pattern for a new quilt. I've got the top 99% finished and it's been sitting in the UFO pile for almost a year now. My poor kids are always the last to get the good stuff.

It's going to be a wonderful quilt!

I so agree with you. Because I design patterns, I am thrilled to just sit down and follow some other designer's pattern.
Your block looks great. So glad you are back to blogging!

I love this quilt so far! What fun, and I agree, new takes on traditional blocks sometimes make the best quilts!

This looks great. I like the solids you've combined because they don't detract from the design plus the colours look masculine without being too dark. Perfect for the youngest man in your house.

I think it is a good choice for P.
